Sony to Launch Twice as Many Live-Service Games as First-Party Single-Player Titles for PS5 in 2026

Only Two Single-Player Title Releases In 2026!

The PlayStation brand is regarded for a plethora of quality first-party releases, often single-player games, but specifically for the current generation of PS5 consoles, their focus has shifted significantly for the worse. The gaming giant has been chasing the live-service bandwagon long after it sailed, and it has experienced countless failures. However, despite their own words that they’re ready to abandon this path, they’re still prevalent in chasing this genre of games.

For 2026, Sony plans to release 4 live-service titles on the PS5 consoles, twice as many as the single-player titles they’ve planned. This comes right after they’ve cancelled 8 out of 12 live-service games.

Here’s a list of first-party PS5 games in 2026:

Game Title Game Type
Saros Single-Player
Marvel’s Wolverine Single-Player
Marathon Live Service
Marvel Tōkon Live Service
MLB The Show 26 Live Service
Fairgame$ Live Service

As seen on the table above, Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine are the only single-player PlayStation games expected next year. Initially, Marvel’s Wolverine was a 2025 release, and if it weren’t for the delay, 2026’s slate would’ve been even drier. As for Saros, the game has a budget of around $76 million, making it more of an AA game, which isn’t a bad thing, but it goes to show the gaming giant’s priorities. Moreover, initial impressions of the Housemarque-developed title weren’t great either, with fans complaining it looks awfully similar to their previous title, Returnal.

Moving towards live-service games, Bungie’s Marathon is the studio’s first title under PlayStation, and things haven’t been smooth sailing for them entirely. Following a rough reveal, bad impressions led to the game being delayed by a whole year. Additionally, the art director’s departure and controversies over art theft worsened internal conditions, further impeding development.

As for Fairgame$, the game also disappointed with its impressions, with many calling it a blend of extraction and battle royale shooter, two of the most fatigued genres currently. The game’s director had also left earlier this year, further complicating development. For Marvel Tōkon, the Arc System Works-developed game is just being published by PlayStation, but the overall impressions of the 2D fighter are positive.

Finally, MLB The Show 26 is an annual iteration of the baseball game and will feature a new throw meter and new animations that add more realism throughout the gameplay experience with nothing new to offer.

The PS5 Pro Is Receiving A Major Overhaul In 2026 That Will Showcase Its True capabilities

Beyond 2026, Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and other unannounced projects are on their way, and we could learn about them soon enough. Aside from first-party titles, there are several third-party games that PS5 owners could look forward to, including: GTA 6, Resident Evil Requiem, 007: First Light, and more. Still, the lack of first-party single-player game releases is highly disappointing compared to the PS4 generation, where there were tons of releases that fully utilized the PS4 Pro’s power, unlike the PS5 Pro, which is yet to justify its existence.
